The flexible charging cable lying on the ground poses a risk to users and pedestrians due to tripping and falling, and far more seriously, due to electric shock resulting from damage to the cable (being run over by a vehicle, throwing the charging handle, impact from heavy or sharp objects, rodents, long-term wear, and more), especially when exposed to water and rain.

Operators of fast-charging stations experience accelerated cable wear due to irresponsible user behavior. Failure to return the charging handle to its holder, forcefully throwing the handle onto the ground, and leaving the cable on the road so that the next vehicle runs over it lead to the destruction of many cables. Replacing a cable costs thousands of dolars and results in labor time and temporary shutdown of the charging station. The combination of the retractor and the column lifts the cable off the ground when not in use, protects against falls and electric shock from unsafe use, and preserves the cable's integrity by keeping it elevated above the floor.

The retractor prevents charging handle cable wear and breakage, reducing it to nearly zero.
