TV Mount Selection Guide

1. Screen Size

This is the simplest part of the process. Every TV mount clearly states the screen size range it supports, whether on the product web page or on the retail packaging. So what’s still worth paying attention to?

  • Thinking about upgrading in the future? If you plan to switch to a larger TV in the future, it’s smart to choose a mount in advance that can support larger screens.

  • Mounting Holes on the Back of the Screen - The TV connects to the mount using four threaded holes located on the back of the screen. You can measure the horizontal and vertical distance between these holes with a tape measure, or simply check the TV manufacturer’s specification sheet.

Because modern TVs are generally lightweight, the distance between these mounting holes is what primarily determines compatibility between the TV and the mount. This standard is called VESA, and it is clearly listed for every TV mount.

Common VESA patterns:

  • VESA 75×75 / 100×100 mm – Typically for computer monitors (up to 49") or very small TVs (usually up to 29")

  • VESA up to 200×200 mm – Small TVs (usually up to 43")

  • VESA up to 400×400 mm – Large TVs (typically 65"–75")

  • VESA up to 600×400 mm – Very large TVs (up to 90")

  • VESA above 600×400 mm – Extra-large TVs up to 115", with mounting patterns that can reach 1200×600 mm

2. Choosing the Arm Length – Distance from the Wall

Why does the arm length matter?

The farther the TV is from the wall, the wider the viewing angle you can achieve. Allowing you to watch comfortably from more positions in the room. However, a longer extension also creates greater load and torque on the mount, which means a stronger, more robust (and therefore more expensive) mount is required.

  • Fixed Mount – Minimal Distance from the Wall. Also known as a low-profile or flat mount. The TV sits flush against the wall and cannot be moved at all. Ideal when you want the TV to look like a picture frame, with the smallest possible gap from the wall. This is the most affordable type of mount.

  • Tilt Mount - Allows the screen to tilt downward toward the viewer. This significantly improves the viewing experience and helps reduce glare and reflections on the screen. Best suited when viewing is mainly from a single position directly in front of the TV. Slightly more expensive than a fixed mount.

  • Swivel & Tilt Mount - Allows a small degree of side-to-side swivel in addition to tilt. Best for smaller screens (typically 29"–50") and situations where only minimal side movement is needed, when viewing is still mostly from straight ahead. Priced slightly higher than a tilting mount.

  • Full-Motion Mount – Maximum Distance from the Wall. Also known as an articulating mount. This option delivers the ultimate viewing flexibility. It allows the TV to extend away from the wall, swivel left and right, and tilt up or down. If you want to watch TV from multiple locations in the home, for example, from the living room and the dining table, or across a wide seating area. This is the only mount that truly makes it possible. This is the most premium (and expensive) type of TV mount.

If you’ve chosen a full-motion mount, the next step is deciding how far the TV should extend from the wall.

The most common and popular mounts on the market have an arm length of 15-20" / 40–50 cm. This range typically allows a 65" TV to swivel about 30–35 degrees. In many cases, this is completely sufficient; it all depends on your specific viewing needs.

Mounts shorter than 15" / 40 cm usually offer only limited swivel and function more like a tilt & swivel mount, with just a few degrees of side movement (depending on screen size).

When do you need an extra-long arm - In many homes, viewing areas are spread far apart, requiring the TV to swivel up to 90 degrees relative to the wall. Today, a 65" TV is no longer considered large, and 75" and 85" screens are affordable and very popular. If this sounds like your setup, you’ll need an extra-long mount.

Here are some recommended arm lengths for popular screen sizes:

  • 30" / 76 cm arm – Allows a 65" TV to swivel 90 degrees from the wall.

  • 40" / 1-meter arm – Allows an 85" TV to swivel 90 degrees from the wall.

  • 40" / 1-meter arm – Allows a 90" TV to swivel 73 degrees from the wall.

Special TV Mounts

Barkan Mounts  offers a wide and comprehensive range of TV mounting solutions, including several unique and specialized models designed to meet specific needs:

  1. Drywall No-Drill, No-Stud Mounts. Drywall construction is extremely popular, but drywall walls are not strong or safe enough for standard TV mounts. Barkan’s drywall mounts are designed with special drywall mounting hardware and have been load-tested at four times the maximum weight stated on the package, ensuring exceptional safety and reliability.

  2. Dual-Arm Mounts. Dual-arm mounts are exceptionally strong, offering ultra-smooth movement and superior resistance to bending and twisting. Bending and twisting are natural mechanical effects that occur with all TV mounts, regardless of manufacturer. The weight of the TV pulls the arm downward, an effect that becomes more noticeable with heavier screens and longer arms, sometimes resulting in slight sagging. This sagging is not dangerous and is often barely visible.

However, using a dual-arm mount for large TVs ensures a flawless viewing experience and effortless screen movement. In addition, Barkan's dual-arm mounts support corner installation, providing even greater flexibility.

  3. 360° Rotation Mount (Portrait & Landscape). Allows the screen to rotate 360 degrees with a simple touch, making it easy to switch between landscape and portrait modes. Perfect for watching Reels, YouTube Shorts, and vertical content on a TV screen.

  4. Outdoor TV Mount. Manufactured with a special zinc coating that protects against rust, sun exposure, and harsh outdoor conditions.

  5. White TV Mount Collection. Most TV mounts are black, but sometimes, adding a touch of uniqueness and elegance to the living room makes all the difference. Barkan offers a selection of white TV mounts designed to blend seamlessly into bright, modern interiors.

Additional Factors to Consider When Choosing a TV Mount

  1. Is the back of your TV flat or does it have a complex design? Some TVs feature stepped backs or integrated round speakers on the rear panel. A complex back design can prevent a standard mount from attaching properly. Barkan TV mounts include a patented solution that allows the mounting interface to sit slightly away from the back of the TV in a safe and secure way, without risky or improvised solutions.

  2. How much warranty does the mount come with? Warranty length is a strong indicator of product quality and the manufacturer’s confidence in its design. Most Barkan's TV mounts come with lifetime warranty, giving you complete peace of mind.

  3. Safety Factor (Load Capacity Margin)The higher the safety factor (For example, a mount tested to 220lbs / 100 kg while officially rated for 110lbs / 50 kg) , the stronger and safer the mount. If no safety factor is stated, there’s a good chance the mount was never properly tested. All Barkan mounts are tested at 3 to 4 times their declared load capacity, in accordance with the stringent European (TUV) and U.S. (UL) standards.

Barkan TV mounts are compatible with all major TV brands, including LG, Samsung, Sony, TCL, Hisense, Haier, Xiaomi, Philips, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba, and many more.
